Yesterday saw my last classes of spring semester. I always feel a mixture of sadness to say goodbye to fresh and funny young students in a class, of disbelief that four months have just passed, of relief that I won't have to teach again till next semester, and fatigue after teaching for fifteen weeks . . .
This semester was an especially difficult and strange one for me because of certain health issues that made me miss a few classes and get extra tired. I think next semester should be less draining, somewhat. On the other hand, in fall semester, my two first-year graduate students must present make theme and method presentations about their next year's thesis topics (and they haven't yet decided their topics), while my second-year student must write her thesis, and she hasn't started yet. I'll do my best! I do think that overall the spring semester classes went OK. I got furious a few times, twice in the Introduction to American Culture and Literature class, once or twice in some Freshman English classes, and that always makes me feel stupid and guilty, like a person who has just realized he's acted like a bully. But mostly it was mostly good times! I was disappointed sometimes by my American Culture class for third and fourth year students, because so many of them missed too many classes and came to class too late and too few of them participated regularly in our class blog. I was often disappointed by my Freshman English class for commerce majors, because too many of them did no homework, lost the handouts I gave them, used only Japanese in class, checked their smart phones, and so on. But, again, overall the spring classes went OK. Thus I miss many students and most of the classes already, even as I feel relieved and lazy. Anyway, I probably won't post anything here until mid-September, when the fall semester gets going. Bye for now!
