During these hot and humid early August days, it's difficult to do anything. However, I have been trying to start getting the fall semester (Koki) website pages ready for the Culture and Culture and Literature classes, trying to write some reviews of books I've been reading or listening to, and trying to survive each day.
And the Olympics have just started. Every four years at this time, I feel lucky to be in Japan, where you can watch many events live and many recorded and most without any commercials (because they're mostly shown on NHK, Japan's national commercial-free channels). Not that I'll watch so many events anyway... Anyway, I'm kind of already looking forward to fall semester!

Whew...... I've finished invigilating and grading all examinations. Now I just need to submit the last grades of Spring Semester, and summer vacation will begin (for me).
I'm puzzled by how poorly so many of the first year English majors did in the Introduction to American Culture and Literature examination. I must re-think how I prepare the students for the test. I may even need to re-think the kind of questions I give them. Recalling the last day of the class, I see that I spent too much time finishing up William Carlos Williams and not enough time preparing them for the exam. I will end up passing almost everyone, but... I will have to give many students a Big Warning that they must improve for Fall Semester and explain the next final examination more clearly and repeatedly. There were about ten outstanding examinations! Anyway, now I have to type examples of good answers to make a handout for the first day of the next semester, and enter about 115 grades, and print and submit them. I do miss the kids! |
