I can't believe a new school year has begun! In America that happens in September, as you can see by reading the date in the above Peanuts comic strip, while in Japan it happens in April. So last week I had my first classes:
Wednesday: Graduate school class for my new MA student, Introduction to American Culture and Literature, and Freshman English. Thursday: Graduate school class for my PhD student, English Conversation I, and graduate school seminar. Friday: English Conversation II and American Culture. Eight classes altogether, so I will be busy this year, and I was exhausted yesterday, Saturday... The first week was extra difficult because on Wednesday we had two meetings from 430 PM until 9 PM, and because on Friday we had our graduate school welcome party for the first year students from 6:30 PM till 9:45 PM, so I didn't get home until around 1030 p.m . Anyway. It was good to meet new students like 110 freshman English majors in introduction to American Culture and Literature (there are 121 people in the class including upperclassmen and law students). This year thought class is on Wednesday so that I told them about the happy hump day greeting and what that means, whereas for several years that class was on Friday so I could tell them about TGIF, which is catchier and funner to say with a big group, although hearing over 100 people say, "Happy hump day!!" was invigorating. They seem like a good group so far, responsive, and I'm going to be teaching about half of them in freshman English and English conversation so I should get to know them better than I usually do. It was also good to meet old students like 60 3rd and 4th year English majors in American culture class on Friday. They also seem responsive and lively, so I'm expecting it to be a good class also. Here's hoping it's a fine new school year!
